“The Patriot” is a shop truck we wanted to unveil on Veterans day as a tribute/thank you to all the men and women who are currently serving and have served in our armed forces. Because of you we live in the best country in the world and enjoy freedom because of your sacrifice.
The Patriot is a 1948 5 window 3600 workhorse that served all it’s life on a farm in Nebraska. So in our typical fashion we felt he had potential and needed to brought back to life so someone can enjoy him and his 71 year old legacy can live on. He had good patina and we loved all the dents and dings as it tells a story and gives the truck character. We started from the ground and worked our way up. Since the original frame was in such good shape we decided to keep the factory 1948 frame and grafted a Camaro front clip and rear end onto him. So he looks like a truck but has the stance of a 70’s camaro and handles like one. We updated the brakes with new pads and rotors up front and installed new shocks at all four corners. The front was lowered with springs the rear has a 3″ block. Next up was the drive-train, we scored a low mileage (140,000) 5.3 Vortech that luckily for us had a rebuilt 4l60E auto overdrive transmission. Just to be on the safe side we took the heads off, did a valve job, replaced every single gasket, the oil pump, new plugs, new plug wires, new fluids, new head bolts, and now he is ready to go for another 140,000 miles. The motor has cold air intake, shorty headers with dual exhaust (super quiet mufflers) and has an aluminum radiator with electric fan to keep things nice and cool.
For body mods we wanted to retain as much of the factory Chevrolet look as possible. So under the hood we smoothed the firewall and added custom intake and valve covers to give it a clean look. Outside we replaced the grill, emblems, bumpers, mirrors, hood strip, bed-strips with all new chrome replacements. The original bed wood was too far gone and has been replaced with new wood. All headlights, brake lights and turn signals are brand new. The truck is sporting an original Fulton visor to compliment the already good looks of the 5 window cab. As mentioned we instantly felt patriotic with this truck and ran with the theme “The Patriot” since we are proud Americans and live in the best country in the world. So the truck was dropped off at our Favorite local pin stripper to do his magic and that he did. We feel the work he did compliments the color of the truck and the brand new red wheels and coker wide white tires nicely.
The Interior of the truck was all redone in black. New seat cover, new door panels, new headliner, kick panels, carpet, and weatherstripping. New glass was used throughout the truck and we installed Altman door latches to make the truck open and shut just like a new one. A vintage style Lokar shifter compliments the rest of the interior styling. New Dolphin gauges keep tabs on everything, Retro sound radio with USB and Bluetooth lets you listen to tunes as you are cruising to the local cars and coffee. A vintage air AC and heat kit freezes you out in summer and warms your buns in the winter. A new chrome tilt column and steering wheel lets you get nice and comfortable while driving. The truck also received a complete new wire harness front and rear as well as a complete new LS swap engine harness and computer with a OB2 hookup located under the dash.
This truck runs and rides like a dream with the camaro suspension and Modern LS engine under the hood. Truck needs nothing but a new driver who will appreciate the old weathered look but appreciate all the modern creature comforts (AC, power brakes, power steering, fuel injection, overdrive trans, bluetooth, etc). Be prepared for the following questions:
What year is that?
When are you going to paint it?
My grandpa has a truck like that, it brings back memories (these are the best and I usually let people sit in the truck or even take them for a ride).
So if you are open to all that extra attention and don’t mind explaining patina to folks and reminiscing with old timers…………………….. The Patriot might just be your truck.
